TAVISTOCK Tennis Club held its annual dinner at the town?s Golf Club last Saturday attended by 40 people. Guests included the Mayor of Tavistock and councillor, Anne Johnson, her consort Paul, club president Norma Woodcock and husband Gerry. Mike Prout in his third year as chairman said it had been a very active year for the Club and he expressed thanks to his strong and dedicated committee who do so much behind the scenes. He thanked president Norma Woodcock, honorary members Mike Jefferies, Ken Watkins, David Isaac, Bill Smyly and Ray Lewis for their contributions over many years. On a sad note he reported the loss of John Jackson, such a popular member who died earlier in the year. In the Plymouth and District League competitions there were five men?s teams, three ladies? and four juniors. For the men results were mediocre due to difficulties of fielding strong teams - the A team in division one held its position, the B team in division two demoted, as were the C team in division three; the D team was promoted and the E team held its position. In the ladies the A team held its position in division three, the B team in division three topped the table and was promoted while the C team in division five was also promoted. The juniors did exceptionally well with the A team topping the table in division one, the B team topping the table in division three and promoted, the C team in division three promoted and the D team holding its position in division four. Mike said that Club coach Richard Stafford was doing a fine job with the juniors which is reflected in the league results and it is worthy of note that junior membership is now of the order of 100. There had been a good entry for the Club tournaments with a high standard of play and some new winners. Outstanding performances were by Sara Lucas who won the ladies? singles, for the second year, and doubles and Josh Brown as a junior winning the men?s singles and doubles. A major event was the hosting of the Tavistock Juniors Open Tournament run over two weekends and attracting players from a wide area. The Mayor presented the winners? cups and the cup for the outstanding member ? which went to Kylie Martin for her dedicated work in running the Open Juniors? Tournament for 12 years. The event raised £180 for the Childrens? Hospice South West ? in ten years it has raised £2,440 for this charity. l Results of the open mixed doubles club tournament: Jenny Read/Richard Stafford beat Sara Lucas/Phil Harbottle in a close match 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
