A NEW skatepark for the youngsters of Tavistock is back on track following the positive result of a specialist noise survey. Work had been due to start on the skatepark in Benson Meadow several weeks ago, but had to be delayed due to last-minute concerns about noise from residents in the area. Skategroup Taviskate, which fundraised for the park for many years and worked with other groups to get the project off the ground, stood to lose £20,000 if their grant money was not used by March 31. The park could not be moved further up the meadow due to the flood plain. But this week the result of the specialist noise survey which had been commissioned as a result of the concerns was ?satisfactory?, West Devon Borough Council spokesperson Alison Stoneham confirmed. Taviskate chairman Richard Porter said the survey result and the news that work could finally go ahead was ?brilliant?. ?I?m relieved it?s all gone well and everything?s been sorted out. Hopefully we can get everything finished by the summer,? he said. Tavistock town clerk Roger Howard said the council was delighted with the news, and work was due to start next Monday, weather permitting. ?We had everyone ready a couple of weeks ago, but had to lay them off for a while for the survey. Now digging work will start on Monday, although a lot depends on the weather.? He was not sure of the timescale for the project, but digging the drains and laying the tarmac was anticipated to take a couple of weeks. Tavistock company Steeltech Ltd was making the ?bits and pieces? for the skatepark,' said Col Howard. ?It?s the right place for the park, near the new youth cafe and Youthwize,? he said. The next meeting of Taviskate will be at West Devon Borough Council chamber at 6.30pm on Tuesday, March 8.
