Devon second XIs A
Tavistock seconds v
Plymouth thirds
TAVISTOCK started the new season with high hopes of repeating last years top five finish, but this was not the start they had hoped for.
Plymouth won the toss and put Tavistock into bat and their new opening pair of Nick Goodchild and Jamie Stephens got off to a good start putting on 46 for the first wicket, mainly due to Goodchild's aggressive stroke play, before he fell to Barrow for 32.
Milligan joined Stephens and pushed the score onto 75 before he was caught. Captain John McGahey came out to join him. With the total on 107, and with Stephens in sight of his first league 50, he lobbed one up to short midwicket for 45; his father soon followed and Tavistock were wobbling at116-5.
McGahey was joined by Gibbs who got off the mark pulling Gill for six over square leg. McGahey went onto 37 before he also lobbed one up to short extra cover off a leading edge. Gibbs hit another huge straight six before he went and the innings fell away with Tavistock ending at 183.
This was still a competitive total but Tavistock would have to bowl well.
The early bowling was inconsistent and occasionally wayward giving Plymouth a comfortable start.
Even veteran Jeffery struggled early on to find his line, but when he did along with a good spell from Jamie Stephens Tavistock clawed the match back from 91-2 to 105 for 6. Colt Dave Milligan also chipped in with a tidy spell of 1 for 23 off 6 overs.
The game was now in the balance but Plymouth debutant G Hart took the game away from Tavistock with a quick fire 49 dispatching all bowlers to all parts, seeing Plymouth home with four balls to spare. This was a spirited effort by Tavistock and a good fight back that another day could lead to a victory. Points: Plymouth 18, Tavistock 8
