JEAN Hutchinson is turning her back on a quiet and easy retirement. The adventurous Okehampton pensioner is setting off to the central highlands of Peru this summer to help care for orphaned babies and toddlers. Jean is going to Peru as a volunteer with the Cross-Cultural Solutions charity. ?I found this organisation on the internet and was delighted to find out that, having retired, I was not too old,? Jean said. ?This is something I have wanted to do for 30 years and now the opportunity is there for me to grab with both hands.? In Peru, Cross-Cultural Solutions provides daycare for the children of families in extreme poverty, looks after children whose parents are being held in a maximum security prison, and runs an orphanage which houses more than 150 abandoned and orphaned children from newborn to 15 years old. Jean might be sent to help with any of these projects, where she will help feed and entertain the children, teach them English, and help put them to bed. She is currently seeking sponsors to help with the costs of her trip.
