EIGHT newcomers joined the regular Tidy Tavi volunteers last weekend — including a four-legged recruit named Tony.
It was the most successful litter-pick since the group was established a year ago.
The latest tidy-up patrol came just weeks ahead of a Tidy Tavi fun quiz, which is open to all, at the Tavy Club on October 19 at 7pm, in celebration of the group's first anniversary.
In total, 33 people attended the litter pick and split into groups to tackle four areas: Callington Road, Parkwood Road, Pixon Lane and along Whitchurch Road to the cattle market.
A second group met at Bishopsmead and patrolled the green areas, up as far as Whitchurch School and the West Devon Business Park.
The volunteers ranged in age from just four years old to 94, while Tidy Tavi dog Womble, was joined by a fellow four-legged helper, Tony the poodle.
Shoppers and businesses in the town centre gave a warm welcome to the volunteers, with a free cup of tea from Bob at the East End Café for the group tidying around the pannier market.
Tackling cigarette butts was one of the hardest jobs for the groups, with calls for more businesses to install ashtrays at the entrance of their premises. An electrical box on the Whitchurch Road had around 40 black bin bags stuffed behind it, suggesting that wrappings from deliveries being made locally are not being disposed of in the right place.
Team members who tackled the West Devon Business Park were disappointed to see so much of their hard work undone by the following day. Looking back on the weekend and ahead to Tidy Tavi's anniversary celebration, Jane Miller said: 'It was the best Tidy Tavi day so far and we hope that the quiz will be a thank you to everyone who has taken part so far and a welcome to anyone who would like to find out more — or who just want to join us for what is going to be a great fun evening.'
Tidy Tavi will meet at the Wharf Car Park at 9.50am on Saturday, November 3. Bring a pair of gloves and turn up on the day — all other equipment is provided.
Tickets for the quiz cost £3 to include a buffet supper and are on sale at the Tavy Club or can be reserved by emailing [email protected]">[email protected]
The event is open to both teams and individuals.
