OKEHAMPTON branch of the Royal British Legion is laying on a coach to take members and friends to 60th anniversary celebrations of VE/VJ Day in Plymouth next month. Crownhill Fort is hosting the RBL Devon County Rally on Sunday, July 3 to remember the 60th anniversary of the end of the second world war ? the date was selected to combine both VE on May 8 and VJ Day on August 15. The event starts at 11am with static displays in the historic surroundings of Crownhill Fort. During the afternoon there will be a mass rally of all the branches of Devon together with the branch standards, led by Okehampton?s own James Stacey, acting as the Devon County Standard Bearer. There will follow a short service of remembrance and thanksgiving. The afternoon will end with Beating the Retreat performed by a military band, likely to be drawn from the ranks of the Royal Marines. The coach will leave West Bridge, Okehampton at 10am on Sunday, July 3 and return at approximately 6pm. Legion members wishing to attend this prestigious occasion are asked to add their names to the list on display in the RBL Club, Station Road before the end of June. Alternatively, telephone the branch secretary on 01837 840757. Those wishing to take part in the parade/rally at 3pm, should, of course, be correctly dressed ? with medals if appropriate.
