A SERVICE allowing Okehampton patients speedier diagnosis using ultrasound equipment, has been described as 'the best thing since sliced bread', by a leading local GP.

For patients with abdominal, pelvic or testicular disorders, the service has been provided at Okehampton Castle Hospital for the past 18 months, and patients no longer need to wait to see a consultant for diagnosis.

Dr Paul Nielson, of the Okehampton surgery, said: 'It has made a real difference to our patients, because they can see the radiologist, be diagnosed and if necessary, listed for surgery, all within a few weeks.

'It also means that consultants based at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital are seeing patients who need surgery only, because the diagnosis has already been made.

'Patients make their own appointments, which cuts down administration time and delays, and we can also perform many of the minor surgical procedures resulting from the ultrasound scanning at the practice, meaning those patients don't need to travel at all.

'In my view, it's a great local service, and we get a fast, high quality report from the radiologist.

'Visiting Okehampton Hospital twice a week, she is also able to write as she consults with the patients, and walks the report straight over to our surgery, about 30 yards away.'

About six patients are seen at each session and their comments have been very positive.

People living in Okehampton, Hatherleigh, North Tawton, Chagford and Bow are eligible for referral to the service.

The time is coming where we will be able to book patients straight from surgeries to operating tables, and I'm looking forward to seeing the technology, which isn't too far away now,' added Dr Neilson.
