Carlsberg South Western League Cup first round

Callington Town 3

Tavistock 0

TAVISTOCK, riding high with seven wins, one draw and only one defeat in their league programme, were favourites to win this local derby.

But Callington are no push-over and proved it in style as they competed from first minute to last.

The first sniff at goal for the Lambs came on 13 minutes, but Paul Smith?s free kick struck the far post and fell back into the grateful arms of Callington keeper Andy Brenton.

As early as the third minute, Matt Shorter was clear but his header was saved from an Andy Sheer cross. He went close again on 19 minutes with another header but eventually got his rewards on 32 minutes with the opening goal.

Sheer was the provider with a cross from the left and Shorter rose above the visiting defence to head past Tavistock keeper Andy Meeds.

If that was not enough of a shock for the visitors, three minutes later Chris Tilbury launched a similar cross from the right and Shorter was on hand at the far post to head into an empty net to give Town a 2-0 lead.

Mike Ruark should have extended the home team?s lead after only 30 seconds of the restart but, having been put free, his first touch let him down and Meeds gathered safely.

The nearest the Lambs came to opening their account was just prior to the interval when John Gosling shot straight at the keeper after Lee Beer had set him up.

The Lambs then had a dominant period with Lee Doncaster shooting wide from a long clearance from Meeds, Beer saw Brenton tip over a long-range effort then go down at the post to deny him again.

Callington?s Gary Williams put in a cross from the left that beat all the defenders but also the heads of Shorter and Tilbury and the chance had gone.

Tavistock?s keeper Andy Meeds kept them in the game in the very first minute of the second half diving at the feet of Mike Ruark, injuring himself in the process.

The decisive third goal came with 17 minutes left and was a personal success for Shorter as he claimed his hat-trick with another header, this time after Williams and Sheer had combined.

It sealed a victory that also saw the return to form of keeper Brenton who got back into the swing with a double save late on to deny Tavistock a late consolation.

A very disappointing display from the Lambs with Callington worthy winners.

l It is cup action again for Tavistock this Saturday when the Carlsberg squad start on the trail of defending the Devon Premier Cup with an away tie to South Devon League side Galmpton with a 2.30pm kick-off.

The P & D side climbed to a mid-table position with last Saturday?s 4-3 win over

Mainstone Sports. Despite taking the lead through Richard Searle the visitors found themselves down to ten men but surprisingly went onto a two-goal lead. But the Lambs took advantage of the extra man in the second half to score three more through Searle, Paul Cowling and Martin Traber to record their third victory of the season.

This Saturday they take on Plymouth Command in the P & D premier at Langsford Park with a 2-30pm kick-off.

l Tavistock monthly draw for September: £50 Russell Bartlett, £20 Lee Beer (Carlsberg), £10 Eric Pinch.
