THE design team responsible for West Devon Homes' landmark development, Godolphin House in Tavistock, has won a prestigious award from the Devon and Cornwall Branch of the Faculty of Building. Mitchell Architects were recently awarded second place for the Faculty of Building Devon and Cornwall Branch Annual Award, for the flagship building, said to provide a 'strong sense of community and belonging' for its residents. The site was difficult to develop, in a cramped position between a busy main road, a public car park and an old railway siding. But West Devon Homes was sure it could be utilised for affordable housing, and in partnership with West Devon Borough Council, established funding to turn the land into 22 affordable flats for rent. Mike Smith, Director of Mitchell Architects said: 'Getting this project underway was a challenge. The design team had to overcome many complicated issues in order to achieve planning consent. We are delighted with the final project and the award we have received.' Jean Peters, chief executive of the Registered Social Landlord, West Devon Homes said: 'We congratulate the design team on this outstanding achievement. 'Godolphin House has also been nationally recognised, as the project manager for the builder, A and H Gadds, recently received a special commendation at the Building Manager of the Year Awards 2006. 'Most importantly, this project provided accommodation for local people, across all generations, in need of housing. They now have secure and affordable homes in the heart of their community.'
