MORE than £6,500 is to be spent on additional accommodation for vehicles and equipment belonging to Tavistock Town Council. Members of the council?s properties committee last week heard that the works department was very short of space at its depot in Pixon Lane. However, a unit had become available in nearby Crelake Industrial Estate, which would mean vehicles and equipment could be safely stored inside, protecting them from the elements and from vandals or thieves. The committee heard the rental came to £6,600 per year, but with three-month break points. Cllr Jane Ramsey said she appreciated the need for accommodation but thought the council should be considering the long-term situation. She suggested that perhaps the council could build itself a unit on land it owned in Pixon Lane. ?We do own that land, it?s adjacent to where the depot is anyway. It?s just a thought ? it seems silly if we own the land anyway, and it doesn?t have to be anything fancy,? she said. Town mayor Anne Johnson said the council needed to be ?very, very careful? about how it used such a valuable piece of land and suggested an overall plan of the site should be prepared. The committee was told that two Devon County Council-linked youth organisations had also approached the council ? they were on the lookout for land, preferably publicly owned, on which to build units. The council is already preparing plans to create a car park in Pixon Lane. The committee decided to ask the works superintendent for an overview of the land with some conceptual designs ? it was also agreed to rent additional accommodation at Crelake for the works department as a temporary measure. The decision was due to be ratified by the full council at its meeting on Tuesday.
