AN array of entertaining and exiting football under a blazing sun took place at Fillace Park Horrabridge on Saturday as the ninth annual 6-a-side football tournament took place with with no less than seven of the local teams reaching the knockout stages. But it was Lakeside I who again emerged as champions. Twenty-five teams took part including local teams from Yelverton, Horrabridge, Crapstone, Luxton Building Company, Bere Alston, Town and Country Letting, and Grub Up. Teams were divided into four groups, with the top two in each group contesting the Champions cup and 3rd and 4th place contesting the Supplementary cup. The standard was again very high with the competitive element very evident from the start. Lakeside I after topping their group defeated Yelverton in the finals, and Plympton RBL 2-1 after a close and evenly matched encounter in the semis. LBC reached the knockout stages stages after topping group C and moved into the final after narrowly defeating first Grenville I in the finals and then Horrabridge I in the semis. Lakeside were crowned champions this year after a nail biting penalty shoot out with LBC in the final after drawing 1-1 after extra time. In the supplementary knockout stages Plymouth Civil Service II came out on top after reaching the final by defeating Heskey in the finals, and then narrowly defeating Town and Country Letting in the semis. Their opponents in the final were the young Horrabridge II side who after defeating first local rivals Crapstone 1-0 in the finals then went on to beat Lee Moor I in the semis. The final was a closely fought encounter with the youngsters of Horrabridge taking the lead only to see CPlymouth Civil Service fight back with 2 goals to clinch the Supplementary cup. Horrabridge manager Ian Mullholland was rightly proud of his team of young local lads which bodes well for the coming season ahead. Low point of the day was when Grenville player Karl Bentley broke his leg during one of the matches and had to be taken to hospital. The organisers of the tournament wish Karl a speedy and full recovery.
