A STERN warning was issued this week to motorists in West Devon who ignore parking fines — pay up or go to court.

The borough council is set to crack down on offenders after three years' leniency, according to West Devon's car park manager, Catherine Aubertin.

Legal proceedings are already being taken against nine motorists and more cases will follow if fines are not paid.

Mrs Aubertin said: 'We are taking this action because we feel that the people who do pay and display their tickets and comply with our parking are being discriminated against.

'They are paying for their tickets whilst the minority do not. There are really no excuses.'

The current fine is £60 if paid within 21 days and this is reduced to £40 if paid within 14 days.

But if the fine is not paid, it increases to £137 which includes a court fee and legal cost. Failure to pay at this stage could result in a county court judgement being issued against the driver.
