Devon & Exeter League Premier Division Okehampton Argyle 2 Exeter University 0 THIS was a valuable three points for Argyle, but they were made to battle hard to come out on top. The first 20 minutes saw Argyle play some attractive football, although never really troubling the University keeper. while on the other hand once the University side settled down they looked the more likely side to score. This was shown during the last 15 minutes of the first half, when first a low corner flashed across the goalmouth just needing a touch to secure a goal, then a little later a goal was disallowed for offside. Finally a glaring miss from five yards saw the ball skied over the bar when it looked easier to score. Playing down the slope in the second half Argyle started to put more pressure on the University defence. First Steve Kinsey tested the keeper with a good shot. Then on 50 minutes a pinpoint cross from Chris Wills found Phil Evans, who powered a header past the keeper to put the home side one up. Twenty minutes into the half Argyle increased their lead when Steve Kinsey broke through the middle and beat the keeper with a low shot from the edge of the box. Unaccustomed to being ahead at this stage of the game Argyle were forced to protect their lead with some very good defending. As usual Mike Vernon and Chris Wills were very reliable at the back, but James Williams had an outstanding game, making several crucial tackles when the University threatened to score. Argyle need to produce similar form next week when they travel to take on Pinhoe. The Exeter side are currently only three points ahead of Okehampton but have games in hand. Kick off 3pm.
