Duchy Premier Lamerton 1 St Newlyn East 1 LAMERTON?S first game in Duchy?s top division turned out to be a tough encounter against well organised opposition. St Newlyn?s 4-5-1 system dominated the first half, as Lamerton?s Kev Swift and James Healy were outnumbered in the middle of the park. Nice footwork up the pitch for Newlyn tested the Lamerton defence; fifteen minutes in, Simon Breyley lunged in to commit a foul on the by-line and the resulting free kick was headed home superbly by the towering Russell Withers. Withers had looked shaky early on, with Lamertons Pete Broomfield sharp up front, but the header spurred on a solid performance from the centre half. Lamerton sorted out their tactical inadequacy for the second half, with Paul Breyley filling the void in the middle well. Steve Roast and Tony Jones were solid at full back; Panda Williams impressed on the left wing and Steve Gibbings battled endlessly on the right. It was Williams who hooked a ball forward to create the equaliser. He found Zac Beesley, who teed up Swift arriving into the box and he picked his spot and found the bottom corner. Lamerton then dominated the possession, but lacked cutting edge. Pete Broomfield was excellent up front and his efforts very nearly paid off toward the end. He whipped in a ball from the left and the onrushing Beesley caught his volley perfectly, but steered it wide to the agony of the home crowd. It was a competitive spectacle to start the new season for an improved Lamerton squad. This week: away to St Merryn KO 2.30pm.
