TREMENDOUS totems have been created by youngsters from Okehampton Primary School, thanks to a Japanese visitor. Japanese sculptor Taja has been showing pupils how to make sculptural totem poles which will enhance the school grounds. The week-long project was part of the Big Hand, Little Hand scheme supported by the Devon Guild of Craftsmen, with the school?s share of funding to allow the project to go ahead supplied by the PTFA. Children have each been working on an individual section of the totem poles, which will be assembled and placed around the school grounds later this term. The work is part of the children?s studies on the theme of ?sculpture in the environment?. Japanese-born artist and sculptor Taja is best known for clay sculptures he has completed around England.
