NEW dog control orders were last week agreed by Torridge District Council's community and resources committee, following a six-week consultation exercise.
A report by the council's solicitor was presented to members of the committee — the public responses to the proposals were taken into account before a decision was made.
Members agreed that a 'Fouling of Land by Dogs in the District of Torridge Order' be introduced to apply in all relevant areas of the district, after hearing that 99% of those responding to the consultation agreed that owners should be responsible for picking up and disposing of dog faeces.
The committee also agreed a 'Dogs Exclusion Order' be introduced for all children's play areas under the council's control. Members were told that 82% of consultees were in favour of such a move.
Barry Parsons, chairman of the committee, said: 'I believe these new orders are in the best interests of the people of Torridge.
'Certainly, we have taken on board comments made during the consultation process, and indeed during the meeting itself, and members entered into an open and frank discussion about each new proposal.'
The new Dog Control Orders will have to be ratified by full council before they can be implemented.
