THE game was a challenge for Tavistock ladies' hockey team as Plymouth are top of the league.

The match opened with Tavistock putting in good tackles from Fiona Dunn, Becky Hutton and Sue Hornby.

Plymouth were awarded numerous short corners but the defence of Tavistock was too quick for them.

Tavistock were unfortunate not to be able to get on the end of some good balls in from Sue Gawman, Emma Bowden and Lisa Hogan. At half-time the score read 0-0.

In the second half Plymouth chipped a ball into the back of the net from a rebound off one of the Tavistock players. Goalkeeper Rebecca Creasy did well to clear the first shot but her sight of the ball was hindered by the Tavistock player.

Tavistock made every effort to take the second goal of the match but just could not find the back of the goal. Captain Fiona Dunn and Judy Smallacombe passed the ball superbly down the pitch and Dunn was on sight for the goal, however, the defence of Plymouth contacted the ball and pushed it off the back line resulting in a short corner being awarded to Tavistock.

A CLOSE match with many scoring chances on both sides. The first half was even with both sides making penetrating efforts to be beaten back by the defence. Tavistock had more scoring chances but a strong Mannamead goalie kept the ball out.

The second half started with pressure from Tavistock but the goal was elusive. Mannamead came back and put the Tavistock defence under relentless pressure.

Tavistock were lucky not to concede a goal when the ball went through the keeper's legs but failed to cross the line and was eventually cleared.

IN the first half Tavistock made some good attacking moves. Laura Armstrong made strong runs but was unable to get around the defence. The keeper again played well.

Mannamead had one or two chances but were unable to get a shot on target.

In the second half Tavistock were able to string moves together and play became more fluent. Following a good attacking move initiated by Janet Simmons, Laura Armstrong was able to slot the ball into the net.
