IN division one of Okehampton and district Table Tennis League last week Bridestowe were at home to Dartmoor Fringe. Mark Fogerty and Mark Tancock put Bridestowe 2-0 ahead beating Andy Moppett and Keith Smith in straight sets. Peter Richardson pulled one back for the Fringe beating Phil Down in straight sets.

Bridestowe took the next four singles before Andy Moppett won the second for the Fringe also in a hard fought four leg win against Phil 12-10, 6-11, 9-11, 11-13. The two Marks both scored maximums for a 7-2 lead but Andy and Peter beat Phill and Mark Fogerty to make the score 7-3 for Bridestowe.

League leaders Tavistock A played Okehampton A, Tavistock playing new signing, number one junior from Plymouth Richard Marshall; Okehampton lined up with two reserves, Naomi Jackson and Frank Cockburn.

Richard and Fred Phillips won the first two games beating Tony Howick and Frank Cockburn. Naomi did well to pull one back for Oke beating Peter Hicks in five legs 11-9, 9-11, 11-7, 8-11, 13-15. Fred just beat Frank 11-9 in the fifth leg. Richard just beat Naomi 11-3, 11-1, 9-11, 5-11, 11-9 to put Tavistock 4-1 ahead. Tavistock won the next four singles and doubles to win 9-1, not before Naomi took Fred all the way, just losing out 11-6, 11-7, 6-11, 7-11, 11-5.

The division two match Milton Abbot against Okehampton B saw Dick Randell winning the first against Michael Blatchford; Cath Smith won the next against 10-year-old Max Williams with a hard fought 11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 4-11, 8-11 to put Okehampton 2-0 ahead.

Ian Osborne pulled one back beating Ann Creamer in straight sets. Dick won the next against Max and went on to complete a fine maximum against Ian. Milton Abbot twice levelled the match at 3-3 and 4-4. Cath won her second against Michael and joined Dick in the doubles beating Max and Ian for a 6-4 win for Okehampton B.

In the division two match, Moretonhampstead against Anchorage C, Ken Underhill put Moreton 1-0 ahead against Barry Williams. Anchorage levelled with a hard fought tussle with David Dashper beating David Shilston 11-9, 5-11, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11. Shilston won his next game against Barry Williams and Richard Underhill put Moreton 4-2 ahead beating David Dashper in five legs. Anchorage levelled at 4-4, Steve beating David and Barry beating Richard. Moreton won the last single for 5-4 lead before Anchorage won the doubles for a 5-5 draw.

Academy A took on league leaders the Young Ones who raced into a 4-0 lead. In the first Tom Pearce fought all the way, just losing to Sarah Jackson 5-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-4, 7-11. George Haskell won the next against Tom Pengelly then nine year old Edward Haskell did well to beat Wayne Pearce 8-11, 11-5,10-12, 9-11.

Tom Pearce beat Edward to pull one back for the Academy while George beat Wayne in the next. Young Edward put his team 6-1 ahead in another exciting five leg win against Tom Pengelly; Wayne did well to beat Sarah in the next.

The last singles was another thriller, George beating Tom Pearce 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-7, 10-12. Academy did well in the doubles Tom and Tom took the 100% doubles record off Sarah and George and the Young Ones completed the double with another 7-3 win.

Club rivals Anchorage B completed the double over their C side, thanks to a hard fought maximum by Dave Wilson ably supported by Roger Gilbert with two singles. The B side raced into a 5-0 lead, Roger Gilbert winning the first in five sets against Barry and his second against Steve Plantosa also in five sets.

The C side went on to win three of the last four singles, Barry Williams beating Dave Wilson and Roger Gilbert. In the last Roger and Dave won the doubles against Barry and Steve to win the match 7-3.
