LYDFORD Primary School has received a national accolade for its commitment and excellence in arts education.
The school has been presented with a gold award by Artsmark — a scheme managed by Arts Council England aimed to encourage schools to increase arts education.
Since Artsmark began nine years ago, more than 16% of schools in England have achieved the high standards of the award.
Linda Wells, headteacher of Lydford Primary School, said: 'I'm delighted that the Arts Council has recognised Lydford's dynamic arts education programme.
'Our students have really enjoyed working with Wren Music, Don Newton and others in a wide range of activities, and I'd like to thank all our staff for their hard work in achieving this award.'
Chris Humphrey, south west executive director for Arts Council England, said: 'Arts Council England is committed to great art for everyone and we believe that if children are creatively inspired at an early age, they are more likely to have a lifelong engagement with the arts.
'Artsmark sets the standard for outstanding arts in schools and this gold Artsmark award recognises Lydford Primary's passion for the arts and belief in the power of creativity. It's great to see the enthusiasm the award encourages in the teachers, students and local communities — they should be proud of what they have achieved.'
To receive an Artsmark, a school must dedicate a minimum of 10% of its curricular teaching time to the arts; 12% wins a silver Artsmark and 15% qualifies for a gold Artsmark. An Artsmark school also provides teachers' professional development and involvement with local artists and arts groups.
