ARMY training on Dartmoor and safety measures at the Merrymeet Junction on the A30 were top of the agenda when Liberal Democrat deputy leader Menzies Campbell visited the Okehampton area on Saturday.
Mr Campbell, who is his party?s shadow foreign secretary, was in the area to support David Walter, the party?s newly selected prospective parliamentary candidate, and learn first hand about these two important local issues.
At Okehampton Camp, Colonel Tony Clark explained the value of training on Dartmoor to the armed forces and the ways in which they co-operate with the local community.
Mr Campbell then visited the Merrymeet Junction near Whiddon Down, with Mr Walter and district councillor Kenneth Williams. This location, which has been the scene of many accidents, is in line for a major improvement scheme.
Mr Williams, who is the South West co-ordinator for the charity Road Peace, pointed out that it was possible for drivers to set out from Mr Campbell?s native Scotland and not have to negotiate a single roundabout until they reached Merrymeet.
?Our objective is to see traffic in this area flow not only smoothly but also safely,? he said.
