Tavistock 1st XV 45
Chairman's XV 20
TAVISTOCK hosted its Boxing Day game with Matt Cole's 1st XV against Stan Staniland captaining Bob Law's Chairmans team.
Tavistock welcomed club players new and old and there were a considerable number of students in both sides.
With large squads, snow on the ground and the usual fierce rivalry, this annual in-house fixture promised to be quite a spectacle. Tavistock started up the slope and the crowd was not disappointed.
Tavistock had the Chairman's on the ropes for the first ten minutes and from a lineout drove for the line to allow Paul Williams to score at close quarters. Tavistock, with their tails up, continued their Barbarian-style rugby and scored once more through Rob Weldon. The turkey factor then started to kick in and Chairman's replied with some ferocious attacking. They scored their first try through veteran centre Chris Greatrix.
The match continued with both sides playing an expansive game. There was plenty of scoring for both but Tavistock always looked more dangerous in attack.
Plenty of fresh replacements were used in both sides and in the second half Tavistock had the slope. The pace of their game was raised and they opened their lead on the Chairman's.
In the latter part of the second half Tavistock loosened their grip and the Chairman's looked dangerous in attack. But it was too great a task for them.
Scorers: Tavistock, Paul Williams, Chris Boyd, penalty try, Dan Bourham, Rob Weldon, Simon Thompson, Gareth Mason, Josh Sutton. Chairman's Chris Greatrix, Darren Sutton, Andrew Griff, Duncan Law.
