A TAVISTOCK Rotarian has embarked on a mammoth trip to provide medical aid to people in Albania.

Tony Everitt, a member of the Rotary Club of Tavistock, together with Denis Killen from Plymouth Saltram Rotary Club, left Yealmpton recently on the start of a 4,000 mile round trip to provide much needed medical aid to Bulqise, a chrome mining community located in the mountainous area of north eastern Albania.

The journey to Bulqise will involve travelling through France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Hungary, Croatia and Montenegro before entering Albania via the Hani i Hoti entry point.

The whole journey should take about 10 to 12 days.

Bulqise is one of the poorest communities within Albania and its hospital is in severe need of support.

Tony Everitt said: 'This is the Overseas Project Team's 49th project in the last ten years and the Rotary Club of Tavistock is delighted to be involved as is my colleague's club of Saltram and delighted to have the opportunity to help those overseas less fortunate than ourselves.'

On their way through Albania the Rotary team will deliver fire-fighters protective uniforms to the communities of Lac and Kavaje – in the past Rotarians have provided Lac with a modern fire appliance to replace an obsolete and inefficient machine together with breathing apparatus and crash rescue equipment.

Four fire engines have been provided to Albania in the last four years and a further vehicle will be delivered to Bulqise in September.
