A DEVON pub has won the prestigious regional title of pub of the year as voted for by real ale devotees. The Tom Cobley, at Spreyton was presented with its prize yesterday evening (Wednesday) and also hosted the launch of the latest edition of the Good Beer Guide. The tavern was chosen as the Exeter and East Devon CAMRA branch?s pub of the year earlier this year and has now claimed the title of this year?s CAMRA South West regional Pub of the Year. The South West region defined in the competition stretches all the way from Swindon to West Cornwall, but despite stiff competition, members judged the Tom Cobley to be the best pub. The whitewashed pub is set in the heart of the village just a few yards from the village church where Tom Cobley was laid to rest. Landlord Roger Cudlip, who runs the 16th century freehouse with wife Carol, was thrilled with the result. He attributed the family-run pub?s success to the hard work of all their staff. Rowland Honeywill, spokesperson for the Exeter and East Devon Branch of CAMRA said: ?The Tom Cobley had been chosen from an ?outstanding list of competitors?. He said: ?The pub has a phenomenal range of up to 14 ales, but it is really about quality and not quantity.? The Tom Cobley will now go forward to represent the region in the next stage of the national contest. The 34th edition of the CAMRA Good Beer Guide edited by award-winning beer writer Roger Protz, was also launched at the Tom Cobley as part of the celebrations. The popular guide book contains 4,500 full pub entries, with information about the best beers, finest food, accommodation, family and disabled facilities and history.
