IT is regrettable that the debate about Whitchurch Road has become personalised. The fact remains that most of the supposed problems are issues of perception. A pedestrian on a narrow pavement will perceive a car's speed very differently from one who is separated from it by a grass verge or railings.

It is also worth reminding drivers that we do, to a certain extent, create our own road conditions.

A driver travelling at 30 mph is likely to make good progress in a steady flow of well-spaced and well-mannered traffic, whereas someone creeping along nervously at 20 or even 15 in a 30mph zone will be more likely to experience tail-gating, overtaking and all manner of hand signals.

Finally in answer to D J Stirland it is perfectly straightforward to turn right out of Priory Close. The advice is the same — stop, look, listen and then having made a decision, use your right foot and get on with it!
