THE heartwarming story of a wife's devotion to her husband following a tragic accident which left him brain damaged is to be told on an episode of ITV's new series Love Your Garden. Green fingered television presenter Alan Titchmarsh and crew were at Burdon Grange Care Home in Highampton on Tuesday to meet resident Alex Wood and his wife, Tamsyn. Alex and his family are to appear on an upcoming episode of the new series of Love Your Garden, which started on Tuesday on ITV 1 at 8pm. The series makes over the gardens of people nominated by friends or family who are described as deserving them the most. The garden at the family home in Northam is to be transformed so that when Alex visits home, he will be able to go outside with relative ease, while providing a garden also suitable for Tamsyn and the couple's four children, Monty, Esmie, Mitzi and Lola. The changes to the garden are currently top secret, and will be revealed when the programme airs in the next few weeks. In October 2011, Alex sustained a head injury during rugby training — his head hitting someone's knee during a scrum. Initially able to cycle home, Alex was disorientated, and tragically misdiagnosed with a chest infection. His condition got worse and Tamsyn took him to hospital. An MRI scan revealed a blood clot, and Alex was monitored at a neurological ward before he deteriorated, suffering a massive brain bleed. Two lifesaving operations were a success but he spent ten weeks in a coma. Alex, Tamsyn and their four children were living in Les Landes on the French coast at the time of Alex's accident. Alex's parents Anne and Pete relocated to France to be near to the family during Alex's initial recovery before the family returned to England. The accident has left Alex blind, brain-damaged and in a wheelchair. Yet, during all that hardship, Tamsyn's devotion to her husband has not wavered, visiting him every day at Burdon Grange. Mr Titchmarsh said he was 'amazed' by Tamsyn's dedication to Alex and their children. 'You can't help but be impressed by someone's love, devotion and the dedication that Tamsyn has shown. She's still bringing up four children on her own, with support from friends and family. 'She's indefatigable. Quite an amazing woman. To be able to help someone like that, in some way improve and ameliorate their life is a great treat from our point of view. 'Tamsyn, who is an amazing wife, and their four amazing children, battle on. They are incredible and encouraging. Tamsyn comes to see him every day, and the children come twice a week. It is incredible commitment. 'They moved to this part of Devon, which they love because they wanted to be near the sea. The garden, there has been no time to do anything with it, so we're making a garden that will suit all the family, Alex included, somewhere to Tamsyn to chill out, but exactly what we are doing is a secret! We're making a garden that will be built for all of them. It's amazing what a difference something which is tailor made for a particular family can do. 'It's quite emotional. Yet the programme offers gardening information that would suit anybody else as well, so while the garden we create is just for them, there's things other people can learn from the programme that people might want to do in their own garden.' After filming at the home had finished, Mr Titchmarsh took the time to meet with residents of the care home, and briefly chat with them before filming duties resumed elsewhere. He said: 'Burdon Grange is an amazing place. Places like this always lift my spirits because it shows people's dedication and people's unwillingness to give up. To keep trying on and keep improving people's quality of life. 'We do it in a tiny way with our gardens and they do it every day here.'
