THE groundsman for Yelverton's War Memorial pitch has been presented with a prestigious award. Steve Lydon, who lives in Plymouth, was awarded the South West Groundsman of the year for his 'outstanding work' on the football pitch. Mr Lydon is the chairman of Wessex Lopes Arms Rangers, a team which has been playing in Yelverton for 40 years. During the winter he cares for the pitch and in the summer he cares for the whole ground for the Yelverton War Memorial Hall and Field Committee. Every year the Devon County Association presents a groundsman's award — two months ago Mr Lydon had a visit from county officials who looked at the pitch and machinery he used. He said: 'I have limited equipment and they thought I did a wonderful job with what I have. I am over the moon with this award. Members from the committee are chuffed that the ground is up to scratch.' Mr Lydon is pictured being presented with a bottle of champagne, in recognition of his award, by Maureen Crosbie, hall committee chairman, and Ian Bickle, vice chairman.
