THE South West Winter Foursomes competition, sponsored by The Plumb Centre, continued at Yelverton Golf Club on Sunday. The weather was not conducive to good play, with severe winds and occasional rain showers.
But it did not stop Tim Aggett and Rob Sandford (Staddon) from playing some tidy golf, getting four birdies in the first six holes, and unsurprisingly, winning the first five holes against their opponents from Tavistock, assistant professional Wayne Basford and partner Ross Bryant. There was a resurgence from the Tavistock pair getting back to two down by the 12th hole, but Aggett and Sandford managed to hold on to win five and four.
Local players Chris Chapman and Jamie Shobrook were too strong for their opponents from Holsworthy, A Morriss and M Ford, winning three and one. Home advantage proved too much for Keith and David Rendell and they lost to another Yelverton pairing, Paul Isaac and Pete Franklin three and two.
But home players Ian Apps and Darren Billing could not take advantage of playing on their home course and lost to the all-lady pair of Bev Ruth (Tavistock) and Jane Wright (Staddon) by seven and five.
In an all Yelverton match Brian Blaber and Mike Ayres came back from three down, to beat their opponents Paul Pitt and Dave Smith one up, the last few holes played in driving rain.
As if the conditions were not bad enough at the end of the match one match went to the 19th to decide their match. Tracey Loveys, Bigbury's professional, hit the green in strong cross winds, but Ryan Fricker was short and left. His partner, Ben Jackson, was not able to chip close enough to get 'up and down', which left Amy McSweeney to put close enough for the all lady pair to win with a par.
They will now play the Royal North Devon professional Ian Parker and his young partner Jamie Mullen, who managed to play par golf to defeat their opponents from China Fleet, Paul Holdsworth and former winner Darren Mallafre four and two.
The other professional left in the competition, David Jeffs (Libbaton), had a walk-over, as his opponents were unable to play. They will play the Yelverton pairing of John Chapman and Tim Shobrook.
The fourth round will be played on Sunday, November 23, when the first round losers will also compete in a foursomes medal, the top eight pairs to go through to the Plate quarter finals, to be played in the New Year.
