THE weather was generally kind to the 14 volunteers who generously turned out for Tidy Tavi’s monthly litter-picking session on Saturday, July 2.

Apart from a gentle shower or two, the sun shone and a good haul of rubbish was collected around Tavistock.

Some teams noticed an increase in the incidence of fly tipping of domestic waste in bags beside some roads. This often resulted in all sorts of unpleasant items, some in a state of semi-decay, which were difficult if not impossible to clear up, said Tidy Tavi members.

‘In some cases, this sort of detritus has to be reported and left for council staff to deal with’, said a spokesperson for the group.

‘One very obvious case of dumping was the soggy mattress that had adorned the traffic island near the Tiddybrook roundabout for some time now. This had provided a rather questionable welcome to visitors entering Tavistock on the A386 until it was removed and disposed of by Tidy Tavi volunteers on Saturday.

‘If you would like to help in your community in a very direct and effective way, do join the Tidy Tavi volunteers when they meet at the Meadowlands Leisure Centre at 10am on Saturday, August 6.’
