Okehampton Argyle 2
Newton St Cyres 1
ARGYLE continued their recent good run with a scrappy victory over bottom club Newton.
Adam Mortimer was again absent because of a back injury. His place was taken by Danny Maddax.
Argyle started the sharper with Jason Sandford and Nic Pollard linking play well. Ian King and Neil Agnew dominated the midfield and were at the centre of all Argyle's attacks. Argyle forced many corners and Graham Soby was a constant threat at each.
But against the run of play Argyle were caught napping by a quick Newton break and their attacker slotted the ball home under Richard Bailey.
This spurred Argyle for an equaliser and it came via the impressive Martin Carver, the only player to follow a through-ball. He challenged the visiting keeper then smashed the loose ball into an empty net. Argyle were now dominating but at times became too complacent and lost some rhythm. But just before the interval a superb through-ball by Lloyd Chapman found Pollard wide on the right and his first-time cross was met by King who side-footed home from inside the six-yard box.
After the break Argyle struggled to find any pattern to their play. This allowed Newton to push forward and they pinned Argyle back at times.
Maddax was replaced by Aaron Bourne who again staked a claim for a starting place with a solid display wide on the right.
Carver had to come off with an injury and was replaced by player-manager Paul Adams. Bailey was called upon to make some timely interceptions. The reliable Graham Soby somehow made a spectacular clearance from under his own crossbar after Bailey had been lobbed. This was followed by a good save from Bailey from a long distance shot.
This week Argyle are away to fellow strugglers Feniton who earlier in the season humiliated them with an emphatic 4-1 victory - revenge is sought as Argyle hope to climb away from the wrong end of the table.
Players to meet in the car park at 12.45pm.
