Devon & Exeter League Premier Division Okehampton Argyle 3 Topsham Town 1 OKEHAMPTON did themselves a power of good by recording only their second league victory of the season. With only the top two clubs winning, the rest drawing or losing, meant that Argyle are within reach of a safe mid-table position, but with 18 games still to play, anything could still happen. Mark Burdus first put one shot inches wide of the post after two minutes, then tucked away a similar chance three minutes later, followed by a third just over the bar on eight minutes. Added to this was another shot just over the bar from James Williams a couple of minutes later. After such a good start it only seemed a matter of time before Argyle scored again. But after 15 minutes they were brought down to earth when Topsham equalised from their first worthwhile attack. An overhead kick from Stuart Luxton from just inside the box saw the ball loop over the outstretched hands of keeper Chris Dearing and squeeze under the bar. With the game now more evenly poised, chances were made by both sides, but found both keepers in good form. Argyle?s biggest scare was when James Williams nearly sliced a clearance into his own goal, but fortunately keeper Dearing managed to recover in time. Argyle went back in front just before half time when Mark Burdus beat the keeper to a bad backpass, and then walked the ball into the empty net. Topsham had much more of the game in the second half, but poor finishing let them down. A good decision by the referee after 70 minutes saw Argyle increase their lead. He let play continue after Steve Williams was fouled ? his pass had already found Rob Sandercock unmarked in front of goal and he made no mistake with just the keeper to beat. This week Argyle are away to league leaders Heavitree Social Utd, kick-off 2.30pm.
