HAVING had a successful and enjoyable morning at the Kelly Biathlon event earlier in the day, some of the Tavistock Swimming Club squad went on to swim for the club in the Cornwall and West Devon League at Dinnaton in the afternoon.

Tavistock, rather unfortunate to be unable to field a full squad for the gala, finished in third position as many swimmers had to swim up an age group.

However, with typical Tavistock spirit they made the best of a difficult situation with the 11/u boys' freestyle relay team of Ross Williams, Martyn Greep, Tom Crocker and James Hill putting in a tremendous effort to take first place.

Swimmer of the gala certificate was awarded to Caroline Ball for her convincing win in the 50m fly in which she gained her Western Counties qualifying time.

Personal best times were recorded by Alice Warnett 50m free; Jessica Barnes 100m fly; Kirsty Best 50m breast and 25m fly; Rachael Kelly 100m back and 100m breast; Philippa Smith (girls' captain) 100m fly; Caroline Ball 50m; Tamar Preston 100m free, Tom Crocker 25m fly; Nicholas Jarman 100m breast.

Squad members: Richard Freedman (boys' captain), Amy Warnett, Ross Williams, Sam Broome, William Crocker, James Hill, Michael Best, Sebastian Lee, Alison Kelly, Chris Tetley, Hannah Ball, Francesca Gould, Martyn Greep, Jake Broome.

Assistant club coach Rachael Warnett praised the way in which the squad performed and commended Rachael Kelly, Jessica Barnes and Tamar Preston for their unstinting support on poolside throughout the gala. Thanks were expressed to all the parents who officiated at the gala, without whom, these events could not be held.

Coaching sessions (according to age/ability) are held on Sunday (club night), Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings and Tuesday (land/swimming training) and Friday mornings. Anyone wishing to join their local swimming club can contact chief coach Paul Chinn on 810168 for further details.
