The University of the Third Age in Tavistock is celebrating a youthful ten years of existence with a special event at Tavistock College.

The Tavistock branch, known as West Dartmoor U3A, was formed in 1991 with the aim of

providing educational, cultural and social opportunities for people of 55 and over. Almost 200 people now take advantage of this at monthly meetings or in smaller groups covering around 35 different activities ranging from model boat building to history, science and walking.

The celebratory meeting at Tavistock College includes an address by Prof Geroge Giarchi on education, cultural and social aspects of the third age, personal reflections from four members of local UCAs, group discussions, and a talk on the Rev Baring Gould together with folk songs by Martin Graebe.

There will also be an exhibion of the group's work, and the day will end with refreshments and the cutting of the celebration cake.

The event takes place on Saturday November 17 from 9.30am to 4pm and admission is by ticket only, price £5, which includes lunch. Tickets should be purchased by November 3 if lunch is to be provided, and they are available from Ian Silcox on 01822 612751.
