OKEHAMPTON Girlguiding Division held a 'Thinking Day' ceremony to mark the centenary of Girlguiding UK last weekend.

The division covers a large area from Holsworthy to Okehampton and there were representatives from Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers from throughout the district who gathered to join the event.

The groups left Simmons Park at 3pm and proceeded with flags and bands to Okehampton Castle.

At the castle they were welcomed by the Rev Peter Hayes — this was followed by songs, prayers and readings, before the groups marched back to Simmons Park.

World Thinking Day is generally held on February 22, and provides an occasion for members of the girl guiding movement to remember each other and their commitment to international friendship and understanding.

It was first celebrated in 1927 — the date chosen marks the joint birthday of the founder and world chief guide, Lord and Lady Baden-Powell.
