Cornwall & Devon League Tavistock 36 Wellington 26 AT the end of this match Tavistock must have felt that although overall they were superior to Wellington they did not get the convincing victory they should have done - they continually let Wellington back into the game with some sloppy defensive play. On the positive side Tavistock scored six tries with both the forwards and backs contributing effectively to the scoring. Tavistock opened brightly and tested the Wellington defence fully with some surging threequarter play with centres Duncan Law and Doug Lloyd featuring strongly. However, it was a forward who opened the scoring when flanker Matt Cole crossed at the end of the first quarter. As half-time approached, a further try was added by No 8 and skipper Jake Phillips, this was converted by Alex Moy. Before the break Wellington reduced the arrears with a try from Henry Sylvester converted by John Garland. The second half was a ding-dong affair with Tavistock scoring four further tries and Wellington three. That Tavistock should have scored more is beyond doubt with Sam Smerdon going close on a number of occasions and Joe lane also threatening. Duncan Law scored two tries in succession before Matt Cole got his second, a close range effort picking up at the base of a ruck on the Wellington line and diving over from a metre. The final try of the game came from centre Doug Lloyd who finished off a sweeping move involving most of the Tavistock backs. Alex Moy converted two of the second half scores. Wellington?s second half scores came from Mickey Norman, Tim Jenkinson and Taff Jones with Garland adding two conversions. A satisfactory performance but Tavistock will be looking at converting more of their chances into tries and improving a somewhat leaky defence. This weekend Tavistock travel to Crediton in the league, kick-off 2.30pm.
