FURTHER to the letter by Cllrs McInnes and Mrs Garton (Times, Jaunary 15) and also the letter by Roger Mathew (January 29).

Firstly, I must agree wholeheartedly with Mr Mathew's sentiment not to see councillors wriggling across the press in an attempt to evade their responsibility. and would like to add that they and we must not overlook their moral and statutory duty.

Let us not forget that the recent 'errors' by West Devon Borough Council have not only had a dramatic effect on the residents concerned but certain errors technically amount to breaking the law.

However, what saddens me most about the recent events is the complete lack of sympathy shown by the elected councillors for the residents affected by its errors.

To date no councillor from West Devon Borough Council or Tavistock Town Council or even the local MP has been in contact with the residents re the mistake on 'The Manor' appeal. The best that they have been able to muster is a muted apology in the local press. However, there are times when 'sorry' is just not enough. But it seems that some bandwagons are more politically profitable than others.

Also, we must not forget that these are the same people that are currently on a charm offensive to persuade the people of Tavistock that the building of what amounts to a small town on the outskirts of the existing town is a good idea for all the residents and businesses. If the plan gets the go ahead it will also be these people that will be responsible for ensuring that the development adheres to building control guidelines, 106 agreements etc.

On recent evidence I would have to question its ability to deliver on these obligations and call again for a full public enquiry into whether in its current state it can deliver on its obligations to the residents it purports to serve.
