AN acclaimed theatre group is this week getting the recycling message across to students at Okehampton and Tavistock Colleges. Theatre group MOMO has been recruited by Devon County Council and is touring schools around the county performing their 'deceptive' production 'You're Rubbish!', which combines science facts and slapstick comedy to highlight recycling issues. The students are led to believe they are going to hear a serious lecture on recycling given by a council officer, but, when the man's assistant joins in, anarchy ensues. Pupils are bombarded with a stream of recycling facts and how they can personally reduce the amount of waste they produce, reuse items or recycle them. At the end of the performance the students are asked to recall what they have learnt as items appear on an interactive 'Generation Game' conveyer belt. Executive member for environment, Cllr Margaret Rogers, said: 'MOMO are fantastic. They really engage the students who learn about recycling almost without realising it. 'This is a great way of getting the message across to teenagers who can be a hard to reach group. 'The County Council is committed to reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill from Devon's households and to raising awareness of the importance of everyone reusing, recycling and composting as much of their waste as possible.' The school visits by MOMO have been funded by a bonus payment scheme whereby local authorities providing consistently high quality newspapers and magazines for recycling are rewarded financially. Residents can help their local council earn more money to fund similar projects by putting out clean dry recyclables in the right containers. Devon residents have recently been congratulated on their waste management by recycling a whopping 45.8% of their rubbish. MOMO will be visiting Tavistock College and Okehampton College today (Thursday).
