IN last week's Tavistock Times you quote Stephen Swain of South West Water as saying: 'The company has a clear statutory obligation to make its reservoirs and open land accessible to the community —'.

It is beyond dispute that Burrator has been open to the public and much loved by them for a century or more before the water undertaking fell into 'private' hands. There is no statutory obligation to create a commercial enterprise and impose parking charges in the guise of opening it up to the public!

There is an unequivocal injunction against SWW proposals contained in the Environment Act of 1995 which provides that in the event of any conflict between other interests (commercial development Water Acts et al) that the interest '— to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage' '— must prevail'.

I join all the others who have repeatedly asked that SWW discard their aspirations to make money out of Burrator.
