THE creator of one of the most beloved characters in cinema will be at this year's Chagford Film Festival. Wendy Froud, best known for her work creating Yoda for the 1980 film Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, will be at the festival on September 25, to lead a workshop on puppet building. An American sculptor and puppet maker born in Detroit, Wendy now lives in Chagford with her husband, English fantasy artist and concept designer Brian Froud. As well as creating the wise and powerful Jedi master, Wendy created creatures for the Jim Henson films Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal. At the workshop, Wendy will be joined by her son, Toby Froud and William Todd-Jones. Mr Todd-Jones is a British puppet designer, performer, director, movement consultant and writer for film, television and theatre. He has performed creatures and puppets on numerous films including Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Labyrinth, Batman, Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and various Muppet movies. Toby Froud made his film debut in Labyrinth, as the infant brother of the main character Sarah, abducted by the evil Goblin King. He followed his mother's footsteps into puppetry, and has worked on the Lord of the Rings films, ParaNorman and the newly released Boxtrolls. He also made a short film Lessons Learned, in association with Heather Henson's company Handmade Puppet Dreams. As well as the puppet making workshop, Wendy and Brian Froud will be signing copies of their brand new book Faeries Tales, and Brian and Toby will give an insight into the making of Labyrinth and Lessons Learned. Neil Tappenden from Visit Chagford, the town's destination marketing organisation, said: 'The Chagford Film Festival brings the glamour of Hollywood to Dartmoor and Wendy Froud is expected to be a huge draw. 'There are many other reasons to visit Chagford – not least its historic centre, its wonderful independent shops, its artist community and its superb eating places.'
