CHILDREN from Halwill Primary School experienced the flavour of the Far East last week when they learned about the sights, tastes and sounds of Japan. Japanese masks, dance, artwork and origami were all covered during the week, which also included a visit by two representatives from the Japanese Embassy. David Jones, headteacher at Halwill, said: ?The children were really knocked out when the visitors from the embassy came in with their traditional costumes on. ?Their faces when we showed them in were absolutely stunned! ?They have been reacting really positively to the whole week ? it?s been great.? Mr Jones said different aspects of life and the arts were explored by the children. They took part in dance classes, made Japanese masks, enjoyed origami and calligraphy workshops, watched slide shows and every class made a special Japanese screen. There was even an indoor garden, set up in the PE area, complete with water feature. ?It was quite incredible,? said Mr Jones. ?The project is part of a DFES innovation to bring back creativity and innovation into the curriculum. ?We are hoping to get some really high-quality work out of the week, to get some exciting and dynamic work into the curriculum ? in future, we would like to extend this type of thing over a longer period, possibly next year,? he said.
