CAN you tell the difference between the call of a chaffinch and the chirp of a chiff-chaff? On Bank Holiday Monday, West Devon Forestry Commission is holding a dawn chorus walk in Okehampton's Abbeyford woods, where bird enthusiast Dave Powell and Forest Ranger Glyn Bradbury will teach walkers to recognise birds by sight, song and call. The two-hour walk will follow the Tarka Trail through mixed woodland beside the River Okement. It will be followed by a full breakfast at Okehampton Youth Hostel. The walk is suitable for ages eight and upwards and costs £9 per person (including breakfast). Booking is essential — and don't forget binoculars on the day! The Forestry Commission also has a number of other events taking place in the Okehampton area over the summer. Between June 14 and 16, Cookworthy Forest will be hosting a number of events including dawn chorus walks, bat talks, moonlit stargazing, moth viewing and pond dipping. The programme is being supported by the BBC's Springwatch campaign and booking will again be essential. Call in May for full details and to reserve places. And those binoculars might also come in handy on June 24, when Lydford Forest holds a butterfly walk from 1.30 till 4.30pm, to search for fritillary butterflies and other interesting insects. For further details, or to book places for any of these activities, please call the Forestry Commission on 01392 834220.
