DARTMOOR archaeologist Dr Tom Greeves will be giving a talk on Brentor and Dark Age Dartmoor at Brentor Village Hall next week.
Fifteen hundred years ago Brentor seems to have been one of the most important places on western Dartmoor. Recent research suggests that there was 'Dark Age' occupation on the tor and possibly an early church site. Dr Greeves's talk will explore what we know of Dartmoor in the 1st millennium AD and place Brentor in its context of Dumnonia and the beginnings of Christianity.
Studying as a prehistorian at Edinburgh University, Dr Greeves acquired a doctorate in history and archaeology at Exeter University, studying the Devon tin industry.
He was the first sites and monuments officer for Devon, establishing the county archive of archaeology 1976-9. From 1979-1985 he was the first archaeologist to Dartmoor National Park Authority, and from 1985-1990 he worked in London with the environmental arts group Common Ground, having responsibility for the national Parish Maps project.
He has an exceptionally deep knowledge of the archaeology, history and culture of Dartmoor and has written about Dartmoor extensively in books and articles since 1969.
Since 1998 he has been Chairman of The Dartmoor Society (http://www.dartmoorsociety.com">www.dartmoorsociety.com), a dynamic action group working as 'an independent voice for those who find Dartmoor a source of livelihood or inspiration'.
The talk takes place on Saturday, November 16 at 7pm for 7.30pm.
Tickets for the talk are £6 and all monies will be going to the St Michael de Rupe Church restoration fund.
