YOUR correspondent Mrs Godfrey seems to hate everything that seems to go on at Tavistock Goose Fair according to her letter in the Times, January 9.
I would like to make a few comments on her letter:
Fairs around the country have always had the same type of stalls selling cheap goods, the stallholders have always travelled many miles for the day then onwards to another fair at midnight to another venue perhaps even the next day.
As far as the fairground roundabouts are concerned, I remember when the roundabouts were last in the Meadows in the early 50s. What a mess as it rained all day. Where would she find a field close to the centre of the town?
If people want to see goods that are produced in Devon they go to shows or shops, or to the cattle market on Goose Fair Day.
She could have bought a goose roll from Jenny the proprietor of the Market Café.
Once in the market she would have seen a great array of stalls almost all from Devon.
The market has been run for many years by Ward and Chowen who put a lot of time and effort to Goose fair day at the market, ably organised by the manager, David Landick.
There you can find many things made or grown in Devon, apple drinks, local carvings, photos of Dartmoor, Michaelmas Daisies, vintage machinery, local made fudge, in total some 40 stalls, plus the annual goose and poultry sale at 2pm — she didn't need to go any further if all she wanted to see was local goods.
