WITH their indie-rocking, toe-tapping tunes, The Adventures Of ... admitted they are ultimately aiming for 'world domination'—but for now they are pleased to be gaining recognition in the UK.
The self-confessed 'eccentric' band have stormed the South West and have been performing all round the UK with their story-telling songs and high energy, theatrical performances.
Adam Hanington, guitar, Will Gee, bass, and Drew Wright, drums, make up the concept band, based on life in a travelling fair.
Adam said: 'The band is a concept band, in a similar vein to Tommy by The Who and Sgt Peppers by The Beatles.
'The concept is a band that exist in a travelling fair and through our shows we bring the concept to life and tell the story of the characters in the songs.'
The idea to create a concept band came after an Ameretto and Coke fuelled evening watching The Beatles, Clockwork Orange and other iconic films, and so The Adventures Of ... created the 'Rock 'n' Roll Circus and Cabaret' show.
The band formed in 2008 but only gained drummer Drew last year as the previous drummer left for university.
Adam said: 'Drew saw our advertisement on the internet and moved down from Nottingham to join the band in Tavistock. We all get on really well.'
Eager to bring the band's concept to life, The Adventures Of ... stage a number of big shows when they can, which include circus and cabaret acts, to allow them to make the fair come alive.
'I quite like theatre and pantomimes so we wanted to bring that element in to our performances' added Adam. 'The idea of the shows are to welcome the visitors into the world of the travelling fair. You come into our world and we are the band in the fair.'
With acts like magicians, burlesque dancers and jugglers, the shows are more than just a regular gig. 'We try to get sponsors by getting on the phone and pretty much begging them. They are once in a while things because doing big shows takes a lot of commitment, a lot of hard work and a lot of hard negotiation.'
Adam, Will and Drew have part-time jobs to help fund the band and its big shows, but when not working, concentrate all their time on The Adventures Of...
'We are serious about what we do and we love it. We are a bit wacky and a bit quirky and I think people find it difficult to pigeon-hole us. We want to be successful, spread our music and do what we love,' said Adam.
The band are managed by Strummerville — the Joe Strummer Foundation for new music — who have the chart band Mumford and Sons under their belt, but the trio are looking to get signed by a record company. The Adventures Of ... recently supported another chart band, Reverend and The Makers.
'Almost everyone came up to us after the show and said we were the best band on the night. It was the first time we'd been asked for autographs and photos, and we sold out of merchandise.'
The band say they now boast a growing international following.
Adam said: 'We've had people from South Africa and Germany come to our gigs. We've got quite a good following, a lot of them are really dedicated fans, and they are all really cool.'To learn more about The Adventures Of ... or to by their CD of recorded and live tracks, visit their website at http://www.adventuresof.co.uk">www.adventuresof.co.uk or visit their page at http://www.myspace.com/wearetheadventuresof">www.myspace.com/wearetheadventuresof
