AN historic celebration is being planned in Meeth next month which will provide entertainment and refreshments with an old-fashioned theme. A double commemorative event is being held in the village on December 6 ? in memory of a former village citizen and the tercentenary of the beautiful plaster work Royal Coat of Arms in Meeth Church. The plasterwork was placed in the church by John Tawton and Hanibal Jerman. Hanibal?s son, Samuel Jerman, died in 1758 and left money for charity and for a sermon to be preached every year on the date of his burial ? December 6. The revived ?10-shilling sermon? will take place in Meeth on December 6, starting with mulled cider outside the Bull and Dragon to welcome the arrival on horseback of the rector, in 18th century costume. The celebrations will continue in the church where the West Gallery Singers will entertain with a concert of songs from the 18th century. There will be a short talk about the coat of arms, the sermon ? short too ? and refreshments including a hot cider cup. All are welcome to the event, which takes place at 7pm.
