GIVING and receiving go hand in hand with the Hospiscare Lottery ? and once again the jackpot has fallen close to home. Each week the lucky winner of the Hospiscare Lottery nets £1,000 and on Friday October19 the pound signs were shining for North Tawton resident Deirdre Sanders. Deirdre plays the Hospiscare Lottery every week at Linford?s newsagent, North Tawton, with more than 70 other people who play this way. Deirdre is an avid fundraiser, previously raising £1,300 by having a Mohican and dying it purple and green. She was also involved in raising £2,300 that was split between Hospiscare and another charity. She said of her win: ?I?ve been playing the lottery for three years and not won anything, it seems too good to be true really. We think we might put the money towards a holiday. ?I?m hoping the win will encourage more people to join and to help raise more money that Hospiscare desperately needs.? Hospiscare supports people with life-threatening illnesses, their relatives and their carers. It has been running for 25 years. Initially a community nursing centre for central Exeter it has grown to serve a population of around 320,000 from Okehampton in the west through Tiverton and Exeter to Axminster and Seaton in the east. Two of the 30 Hospiscare nurses are based in Okehampton. They help care for the terminally ill in their own homes by providing specialist nursing care and emotional support. The Hospiscare Lottery raises over £200,000 every year for the charity. The draw is held every Friday and it costs £1 with over forty cash prizes on offer, the top prize being £1,000. Geoff Stamp, the Hospiscare Lottery Manager said: ?More than 65p in every pound of Hospiscare Lottery goes straight to providing services to local people, supporting our nurses in the community, at the hospital and at the hospice.?
