AT last a letters page with a bit of fire! Last week's letters topped the lot. I just hope it's the first of many, where the people of Okehampton stand up and shout. For too long the people of this town have sat back and taken it on the chin.

We all know that our council taxes are among the highest in the land, we all know that the people of Devon and Cornwall are on the lowest wages in the country, yet we do nothing about it!

Petrol costs more, a loaf of bread and a pint of milk cost the same here as in Kent/Sussex or elsewhere. Yet people of the West Country are expected to work like monkeys and get paid peanuts.

How can any young couple ever expect to get a mortgage on a wage of around £4.50 per hour? House prices have shot up over the past three years, yet wages have hardly moved.

Also last week it was announced the Lulu concert is off again, moving to Exeter, what a surprise! At last someone has realised that there is not any money in Okehampton. At least the trustees woke up in time, I hope they didn't get their fingers burnt!
