THE service of thanksgiving for the life of Lewis James Brook, aged seven, was held at All Saints Church, Winkleigh, on October 4. The church was full to capacity and many stood outside to hear the service on loudspeakers. The Rev Peter Norman opened by saying that Lewis and his family were faithful members of the Methodist Church, and everyone joined together not only because of the size of the parish church but to share in sadness and unity of faith. The Rev David Ursell, who led the service, on behalf of the family thanked the emergency services, especially PC Lesley Sykes and police press officer Sgt Alan Hobbs. He spoke of the work of the three chosen charities to be supported, reminding everyone of the tremendous dedication of the Devon Air Ambulance crews. Mrs Jane Rivans, headteacher of Winkleigh Primary School, spoke of the work of the Forest School project, a teaching style developed in Denmark. Lewis adored it because he loved being outdoors, and he participated in every activity with enthusiasm. His love of the woodland setting and the nataural world was obvious. Lewis was a delightful boy and it had been a privilege to know him and have him as a member of the school community. Tom Farley spoke of Farms for City Children at Iddesleigh, where Lewis and his family had recently visited. Lewis had enjoyed the ride around the farm, saw the house, and learned of the work of the charity, which has been runing for 30 years, their motto being 30 years of muck and magic. Mr Farley said he was sure Lewis would be glad the donations would be used to teach city children of what he liked doing best 'a bit of farming'. Mrs Ruth Trenaman, organist, played many children's choruses and songs as sympathisers entered the church. Hymns sung were 'Be Still For the Presence of the Lord', 'Jesus' Love is Very Wonderful', 'Father I Place Into Your Hands' and 'The Day Thou Gavest, Lord is ended'. Miss Janet Lewis, Lewis' aunt, read a poem entitled 'Gentle Jesus up above, Give dear Lewis all our love', written by Miss Ruby Medland, and Mrs Fiona Marshall, Lewis' friend's mother, read the poem entitled 'A Child Loaned'. Mr Ursell said Lewis' life was not a lost life but one that had brought blessing for seven years. He went on to remind everyone of Speargon's quote 'That tears were liquid prayers', and reassured the congregation not to be afraid to let the tears flow. To the children present at the service he gave an illustration to picture later. Come and stand on the sea shore, the ship sets sail and we wave the ship farewell. We watch as the ship goes out of our sight, but there are other souls watching, waiting to meet and greet the ship coming in. The bible reading, Mark 10, 'Let the children come unto me' led into the Rev I Penberfthy's tribute to a real farmer's boy. Lewis was a lovely lively child who enjoyed life never more than when he was helping on the farm. He liked school, being with his friends and teachers, but was always glad to get back home, put on his wellies and get his hands dirty. He played his part in school and in church, but he was really quite shy and needed encouragement and coaxing.AT other times he could be boisterous and mischievous. Lewis grew up in a close loving family and had been encouraged in the life of the farm and chapel. He gladly joined in because they all did everything together. Mr Penberthy spoke of the life of Job, who met with great trouble, tragedy and tribulation, but held fast to his faith. The Brook family had previously had hard and sad times with foot and mouth in 2001 and the loss of Lewis' grandmother, Vera. He said we all need a fiath that will stand the test of time, unlock the secrets of eternity and continue long after the flowers have faded. The funeral director J Fairchild and the bearers M Western, J Scleater, J Clarke and C Bailey led the mourners out while 'The Ashokan Farewell' was played by Trevor Woodison on violin and Pascal Savy on guitar.
