THE eyes may not be as sharp as they were nor the bodies quite as athletic but the memories were undimmed.

Almost 100 current and former members of Whitchurch Wayfarers Cricket Club gathered together on Sunday. With scorebooks dating back several decades memories of classic victories, gallant defeats, run outs, catches, innings were all discussed in depth. Old photographs brought back to life characters long gone but not forgotten.

In the middle of all this a cricket match broke out. Batting first the present members trundled along at 3 an over until Darren Chappell came to the crease and blazed a quickfire ton in 39 deliveries before being overcome by a sudden illness, forcing his retirement.

In reply, the past XI were probably still engaged in remembering past games as they struggled to score, but credit to Chris May for crafting a patient 53 against tight bowling. Bob Jackson and Martin Manning both made valuable 30s.
