THROUGH your columns I would like to express the thanks of all Lions for the support and generosity of the public and the business community towards this year's carnival week programme. The week started with summer sounds at The Wharf, with local bands supporting headline act Joey the Lips, and finished with the carnival procession last Saturday. Special thanks must also go to The Bedford Hotel, The Tavy Club and St Eustachius for hosting some of the wide variety of events. As is often the case, the week's weather was mixed and we were particularly grateful to those organisations that turned out on a very wet and dreary Sunday for fun day in The Meadows. The only event cancelled due to the weather was the 'dog walkers' barbecue on Whitchurch Down on Tuesday evening. On behalf of the club I would like to apologise to those dog owners that turned up to offer their support. Our carnival princess, Ruby Montgomery and her attendants, Layla Armstrong and Rebecca Bradbury, attended a number of events during the week before taking part in the carnival procession, a visit to the mayor's parlour and finally helping with the carnival draw. We enjoyed perfect weather for the carnival procession on Saturday, not too hot or wet and Plymouth Pipes and Drums and Okehampton Excelsior Silver Band both complemented some excellent entries from organisations around the town. Overall income for the week will be in excess of £10,000 including the bucket collection on Saturday which raised £2,445.92. I would also like to thank The Edge for adding some extra 'flavour and colour' to this year's carnival week. From 'flash choirs' to knitted poppies, many Tavistock residents will have experienced and enjoyed the activities of this new community focussed group. A final thank you to all our event sponsors and Mardi Gras advertisers and last but not least to all the Lions and their families for helping to make our 2015 Carnival Week another success.
