FOLLOWING a most successful festival, in my position as chairman of the Tavistock Music Festival Committee, I write to thank the Times and the people of West Devon for their tremendous support. The event, this year, has taken place against a background of minimal public funding and relied on the support of the audiences through their ticket purchase and donations and the generosity of local sponsors. Over a period of five days, twelve separate events were enjoyed in six different venues with St Eustachius Church hosting half of them; welcome new venues this year included the Abbey Chapel and Mount House School. From the School Choirs concert, by eight choirs from a radius of fifteen miles of Tavistock and with the first performance of Andrew Wilson?s Pied Piper of Hamelin to the youth rock bands in the town hall, the festival spanned performances by soloists, choirs, brass and rock bands, jazz quartet and orchestras, and included two events where Tavistock?s famed food was enjoyed. Tavistock Forward is most grateful to the Times and all our sponsors for their support in making this year?s festival a financial as well as a musical and culinary success, and are now planning for next year. Christopher Kirwin Tavistock Forward OVER the May Bank Holiday weekend we experienced a wonderful music festival in ?Tavistock Sings!? and I would to thank those involved, both musically and otherwise, for organising and participating in this event. The music ranged from a classical symphony to jazz; choral works to rock music; chamber music to organ recital; flute and song to brass band. There was music for everyone, old and young alike, whether concert-goer or participant and ?Tavistock Sings!? made this happen. It captured the imaginations of many and established Tavistock as a centre for cultural activities. Without the enthusiasm and unstinting hard work of Christopher Kirwin and Simon Ible and the support of the sponsors this musical happening would not have been possible ? many thanks.
